The Dallas Cowboys are set to take on their final preseason challenge on Saturday when they face off against the Los Angeles Chargers. Though the game might feature many Cowboys starters, quarterback Dak Prescott will not take the field.

Head coach Mike McCarthy is often cautious with starters, especially when it comes to the quarterback. While Prescott will not take the field, he will instead be involved in the game in a unique way.
According to McCarthy, Prescott might instead call plays during the final preseason game. He did so in the preseason finale last season, and the possibility of him returning to this role has been discussed.
According to Todd Archer, “Mike McCarthy has not ruled out the possibility of Dak Prescott calling plays Saturday vs. the Chargers. Prescott did it in last year’s preseason finale. McCarthy believes it helps Prescott see the game from a different perspective.”
Prescott is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and it could be because he is given the opportunity to approach the game from a different perspective like calling plays. Though Prescott might be a coordinator or coach in the future, his ability to read defensive schemes and call plays while still being an active player is invaluable.

Prescott and McCarthy clearly have a great relationship with one another, and their constant communication about how to get better is why the Cowboys have been so successful. The issue now is that both do not have a future with the team past this season.
Prescott is currently seeking a new contract, and should Cowboys owner Jerry Jones not provide a new deal, Prescott will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025. He could sign with any team without facing any drawbacks or roadblocks.

McCarthy is also only signed through this season, as is most of his staff. Should Jones view him as expendable, McCarthy could find a new head coaching job in 2025.
What makes this situation beneficial for both McCarthy and Prescott is the pair could make a deal to follow each other to a new team in 2025. Jones has been slow regarding a new deal for Prescott, and the signal caller might be growing frustrated with the idea of waiting too much longer for it to happen.
Either way, Prescott will end preseason presumably calling plays for the offense, further expanding his understanding of the game of football. Should he not receive a new deal, he will take this knowledge with him to a new team in 2025.
