LAS VEGAS — For the second straight game to open the preseason, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott stood on the sideline and watched Cooper Rush take the team’s first snaps behind center.
Prescott and several other Cowboys veterans, including wide receiver Brandin Cooks and offensive guard Zack Martin, did not suit up for the contest against the Raiders.
The 31-year-old Prescott has missed significant time due to injury in two of the past four seasons. So far this summer, his only opportunities to compete against an opposing NFL defense came in two joint practices against the Rams, during which quarterbacks wore red jerseys that signaled they were not to be touched.
Saturday night, Malik Davis started at running back behind Rush and two rookies — center Cooper Beebe and left tackle Tyler Guyton — started on the offensive line for the first time.
Rush also started the Cowboys’ first preseason game, a 13-12 loss to the Rams six days ago, and he played one series. After that, fourth-year pro Trey Lance took over at quarterback and turned in an uneven performance, leading three drives that ended in field goals but none that produced touchdowns.
Saturday at Allegiant Stadium, Lance is expected to see more action and try to strengthen his case for a place on the team’s 53-man roster.
