Dak Prescott says he has “a ton of confidence” in his ability to work out a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
“I’ve got a ton of confidence, but honestly, it’s not something I think about,” Prescott said, per Fox 4’s Jeff Kolb. “I’m here in training camp and focused on this year. I’m on a contract for this year and that’s all I really care about.”
Prescott, whose contract will cost the Cowboys $55.1 million against the cap in 2024, is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said last week that the team had extended a new offer to Prescott, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram‘s Clarence E. Hill Jr, and that conversations with Prescott’s agents have been “upbeat.”
Those include ongoing talks with both Prescott’s agent Todd France and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s agent Tory Dandy, Jones said.
“Right now, I would characterize both conversations as upbeat,” Jones said last week, per Hill. “We’re having good talks back and forth with both Todd and Tory. I like where we stand.”
Jones also told Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer that he believes the quarterback market has “hit a peak,” which could potentially help the team negotiate with a player likely looking for something around the $55 million per year earned by top quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow.
“It used to be everybody was jumping each other. … Lawrence got 55, which was the high-water mark that Burrow set,” Jones told Breer. “[Years ago], it didn’t matter if you were the best or you were [Patrick] Mahomes, you just leapfrogged the next guy. You’re not seeing that now. It’s kind of hit that ceiling.”
Despite positive indications from the Cowboys, Prescott hinted that he has considered the possibility of moving on from the Cowboys next spring when his deal—which includes a no-tag clause—expires.
The quarterback said his stance on a potential move changed with the birth of his first child in February.
“Having a kid, your perspective changes a little bit in life,” Prescott said, per Kolb. “A lot of quarterbacks have [played for other teams]. That’s just the business and nature of this game. That’s just me not being naive to that.”
Prescott continued: “It’s not something I look for, or prepare, even plan for, but if something like that happens, I’ll certainly be ready for it.”
Prescott has repeatedly said he is focused on the 2024 campaign over contract concerns, but the Cowboys could want to get a deal done to avoid distractions before the season. If so, Jones and the Dallas front office have until the season opener on Sept. 8 to reach an agreement.
