Scarlett Johansson is suing a French publisher for unauthorized use of her name in a novel, according to a new report.
The 28-year-old actress is seeking damages from French firm JC Lattès for ‘breach and fraudulent use of personal rights’ stemming from the publication of Gregoire Delacourt’s best-selling novel La première chose qu’on regarde, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Not happy: Scarlett Johansson, pictured here earlier this year at the Broadway opening of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, is suing over a French novel that depicts a character as looking like her
The trade publication reports the actress is also seeking a ban on ‘future transfer of rights and adaptations of the book,’ which has so far only appeared in French.
The subject of controversy: French author’s Gregoire Delacourt’s novel, with the title translated as The First Thing We Look At, is not published in English
In the story, a mechanic meets a woman who he – as a character – thinks at first is Scarlett Johansson because the woman apparently looks like her.
Sixty pages later it is revealed that the mechanic was mistaken and the woman is in fact someone else, called Jeanine Foucaprez.
The author of the novel, Gregoire Delacourt, revealed he was ‘stunned’ by the lawsuit, in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro.
Delacourt was told about the lawsuit on Friday; the book became a bestseller in France after its release on March 20.
‘I wrote a book of fiction. My character is not Scarlett Johansson, it is Jeanine Foucaprez!’ he said.
Explaining his shock, Delacourt explained that the novel ‘corresponds with the fantasies of our times.’
‘I was hoping that she might send me flowers because this book is, in a way, a declaration of love,’ the shocked author said, adding that he is ‘also very sad’.
Delacourt said that he even referenced the names of other celebrities such as Ryan Gosling and Gene Hackman as ‘looking like’ other characters, simply to help illustrate their appearance for his readers.
The actress is currently preparing for her directorial debut with the film Summer Crossing, as well as filming her role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
‘Stunned’: The novel’s author, Gregoire Delacourt, is reportedly extremely surprised that Scarlett Johansson considered this grounds for a lawsuit
