Entering his ninth season as the Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Dak Prescott remains entrenched as the face of the NFL’s most marketable franchise. For now, at least.
Prescott, 31, is entering the final year of a lucrative contract he signed in 2021. After placing second in MVP voting last season, Prescott has leverage to negotiate his next record-breaking payday, and the Cowboys haven’t yet sewn up their signal-caller as Sunday’s regular-season opener approaches.
Last week, Prescott said “it says a lot” about “how people feel” if the two sides don’t come to an agreement on a new contract before Sunday. It’s the Cowboys. It’s the quarterback. Signs of dysfunction abound. So, of course, the sports world is talking, and here’s a roundup of what media figures are saying:
— NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Monday said the Cowboys and Prescott’s agents were continuing to work on a deal that would make the quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history. But if Prescott doesn’t sign by next March?
“If he does not do a deal then the likelihood is he will be a free agent, the highest-profile free agent we have ever seen,” Rapoport said. “He has all of the leverage you could possibly get, and the clock is ticking.”
— Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw took a more optimistic approach, writing that it “isn’t such a bad idea” for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to let Prescott enter the season without a contract. The millions of dollars at stake could create even more motivation for Dallas’ most important player.
— Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports pointed out late last week that the Cowboys don’t have a clear succession plan behind Prescott. “The Cowboys need Dak,” she said, while describing the options Prescott has in front of him.
— Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano argued that Prescott should pause negotiations with the Cowboys as the regular season approaches.
“There are multiple narratives for the latest QB contract standoff, but in reality, Prescott holds many advantages over the Cowboys,” Manzano wrote. “Prescott can either re-sign now with Dallas and become the highest-paid player in league history or wait six months and become the highest-paid player in league history for a different team.”
