Luke Bryan may be a country superstar with several country Billboard hits, but that hasn’t stopped others from mistaking him for someone else in the industry.
During his time on Jennifer Hudson‘s talk show, “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” Luke Bryan, who currently stars in “American Idol,” recalled the time a gas station attendant mistook him for another country legend, Blake Shelton. However, after a brief conversation, the employee retracted his statements after realizing Shelton wouldn’t be caught dead in such an establishment.
Luke Bryan Admits People Mistake Him For Blake Shelton Constantly
While speaking with Hudson about his busy career and friendship with “The Voice” coach, Shelton, Bryan jokingly threw shade at his country music peer.
“I could recommend you not be his buddy, I can steer you into another direction,” he said to Hudson, who also has a great relationship with Shelton from her time on the NBC singing competition show.
Later, the “Dream Girls” performer asked Bryan if it was true that people often confuse him for Shelton, who married Gwen Stefani in 2021.
According to the “Country Girl Shake It” singer, it’s “very true,” and he couldn’t wait to share a specific example.
Luke Bryan Admits A Gas Station Employee Shaded HimMEGA
Bryan then shared the story of the time he stopped at a gas station on the way to a fishing trip with his teenage son. He explained that when he went to check out, the clerk asked whether he was Shelton.
“He says, ‘I know it, you’re Blake, are you Blake?'” Bryan explained. “And I said, ‘I’m not Blake, but what makes you think that?’ And he goes, ‘Well, you’re just Blake Shelton’s doppelgänger.'”
Eventually, according to Bryan, the gas station employee had a revelation and realized the 48-year-old was not Shelton, known for his songs like “Boys ‘Round Here” and “Guy With A Girl.”
“He goes, ‘There’s no way you’re Blake because Blake wouldn’t be here shopping at this gas station.’ And I get my stuff, and he looks at me and goes, ‘Could you imagine having Blake Shelton’s money?'” Bryan said.
Bryan went on to say that he didn’t respond to the clerk’s comments because he didn’t want to turn the conversation into one about money.
“I didn’t really want to get into it, that I had more than Blake,” he joked.
Luke Bryan Faced Heat For Questioning Beyoncé’s Intention With Her Country AlbumMEGA
In 2024, Bryan became the subject of controversy when he shared his thoughts about Beyoncé’s country album, “Cowboy Carter,” which received zero nominations at the Country Music Awards.
“It’s a tricky question because, obviously, Beyoncé made a country album, and Beyoncé has a lot of fans out there that have her back. And if she doesn’t get something they want, man, they come at you,” he told Andy Cohen on his show “Radio Andy.”
He continued, “I’m all for everybody coming in and making country albums and all that. But just by declaring that, just because she made one. I don’t need [a nomination], just ’cause I make one.”
He went on to say that Beyoncé, who was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and has always taken pride in her country roots, should’ve immersed herself more in the country music scene.
“Everybody loved that Beyoncé made a country album. Nobody’s mad about it. But where things get a little tricky and, and you know — if you’re gonna make country albums, come into our world and be country with us a little bit,” he added. “Beyoncé can do exactly what she wants to. She’s probably the biggest star in music.”
Bryan Clarified His Comments
Of course, following his statements, the BeyHive shared their thoughts about his comments with him online, which caused Bryan to clear the air.
On X, formerly Twitter, the father of two said he felt “in my heart” he needed to clarify his comments about Beyoncé’s music.
“I feel in my heart I could not let media create a false narrative,” he wrote. “As I read thru the comments of some of you I just want to say that I encourage all of you to listen to the interview instead of reading clickbait headlines. You will hear my tone and intentions, which were not negative.”

Following the backlash, a source close to the production of “American Idol” revealed the producers were reportedly “furious” with Bryan for ruining their chances of securing a Beyoncé appearance on a future episode.
