Who Are Simone Biles’ Biological Mom And Dad? What To Know About Shanon Biles And Kelvin Clemons

Simone Biles is, undeniably, the gymnastics GOAT. But in the new Netflix documentary Simone Biles Rising, fans get the inside story of how, exactly, she became that way, in the midst of a career comeback at the Paris Olympics.

In between time at the gym, the docuseries delves into the 27-year-old’s personal life, including her close relationship with her family. But it also touches on her tumultuous early childhood, and how she and her siblings were placed in foster care due to their mother’s substance use.

The docuseries briefly shows Simone’s biological mother in an old video, but Simone has made it clear that her grandmother Nellie—who she calls “Mom”—is the person who raised her, alongside her dad (and biological grandfather) Ron Biles.

So, who is Simone Biles’ biological mother and what is she doing now? Here’s what to know.

Who is Simone Biles’ biological mother?

Simone’s biological mom is Shanon Biles, and she’s done a few interviews. In 2016, she revealed that she didn’t see her children for six years after Nellie and Ronald adopted Simone and her little sister Adria.

“When we signed the [adoption] papers, it was like my dad flipped a switch on me – no communication, don’t call, and don’t visit. That’s how it was at the beginning,” she told the Daily Mail. “It was hard to give up my kids but I had to do what I had to, I wasn’t able to care for them. I was still using and he didn’t want me coming in and out of their lives when I wasn’t right.”

During that same year, she shared that she felt the media’s coverage of her and public comments from Ron were “harsh.”

“I feel like he didn’t have to be so harsh about it,” she told TMZ. “He could’ve been a little bit more classy with it. He didn’t have to put me under the bus.”

Shanon also praised her daughter in that interview. “I just want to say I love you, Simone,” she said. “I’m so proud of you! Go Team USA and I’ll talk to you and see you when I can!”

Who is Simone Biles’ biological father?

Simone Biles’ biological father is Kelvin Clemons, who met Shanon while they both were teenagers. He, too, struggled with addiction, Shanon told The Daily Mail.

Kelvin is not in touch with Simone, but he does occasionally speak with Shanon, she said.

“He just called me Sunday. I said, ‘I’m watching Simone are you watching her? Are you watching her? Call me back later,'” she recalled to the publication. “He knows that’s his daughter and he’s very proud of her.”

Is Simone Biles adopted?

Yes, Simone is adopted. As she discussed in the docuseries and has shared before, she and her three siblings were placed in foster care when they were little because of her mother’s substance use disorder.

Simone and her sister Adria were adopted by her grandfather, Ron Biles, and his wife, Nellie Biles, when Simone was six, per NBC Olympics. Simone’s big sister Ashley and brother Tevin were adopted by Ron’s sister Harriett.

“My parents saved me,” Simone said during her 2017 run on Dancing With the Stars. “They’ve set huge examples of how to treat other people, and they’ve been there to support me since day one. There’s nothing I could say to them to thank them enough.”

Where is Simone Biles’ biological mom from?

Shanon is from Ohio, which is where Simone was born. Kelvin lives there as well, per the Daily Mail.

Simone is currently building her dream home in Texas with husband Jonathan Owens.

Where is Simone Biles’ biological mom now?

Shanon isn’t in the public eye a lot, but she reportedly still lives in Columbus, Ohio. Court records show that she’s had several run-ins with the law, although the last incident was in 2021.

She has some contact with her kids now—Shanon shared some photos with TMZ of herself with Simone as an adult.”“It took me six years before I saw my children again,” she told the Daily Mail. “I was respecting my dad to let the kids transition, he felt that was the best thing for them.”

But Simone has a supportive family, and that’s all that matters to her.

“I’m like, ‘My biological mom is also my dad’s daughter, and I call him dad,’” she said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in April. “So it’s just like, everybody’s hella confused… it’s a whole family tree that you’re like, ‘Don’t make me explain it. My parents are my parents. I got chosen. Feeling blessed.’”
