A new Jason Bourne movie is reportedly in the works with All Quiet on the Western Front‘s Edward Berger in talks to direct. Originally based on the books by Robert Ludlum, the action-thriller series has culminated in five feature films – The Bourne Identity,The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy, and Jason Bourne – as well as a spinoff TV show titled Treadstone. Except for 2012’s The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, all the other movies starred Matt Damon as the titular assassin and were big box office successes.
Now, seven years after the last installment, Jason Bourne 6 is reportedly in early development at Universal with Berger in talks to direct, according to Deadline. Damon is not currently attached, but will reportedly be approached regarding a reprisal of his role as Jason Bourne once the script is finished. There is currently no screenwriter attached to the project.
Edward Berger Is A Great Choice For The New Jason Bourne Movie
Having only directed German-language films up until this point, Berger is best known for 2022’s All Quiet on the Western Front which was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won four, including Best International Film. The World War I movie received much praise for its harrowing battle sequences, though this is a drastically different type of action compared to the Jason Bourne franchise, which consists of espionage thrillers. However, Berger being in talks to direct is a clear vote of confidence from Universal that he can deliver the type of action expected from the franchise.
With Damon’s return planned, the sixth movie is likely being developed as a direct continuation of 2016’s Jason Bourne. However, if Damon refuses to return, as he did with The Bourne Legacy, it will have to take an alternate route and follow a different character, such as Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross. Like the past two, the sixth movie also won’t be based on a book by Robert Ludlum, as was the original Bourne trilogy. While much about the sixth Jason Bourne movie remains unknown, audiences can rejoice that one of the biggest action heroes of the century could be back.
