CLEVELAND — Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was in the room Sunday morning when Dak Prescott received a call from his agent and made history.
Prescott, the Pro Bowl quarterback, used that call to green-light an agreement with the Cowboys that will pay him $240 million over four years, an NFL-record $60 million annually. He finished talking with his agent, and then called his girlfriend and his father to share the update. But he also made a little time for Elliott.
It was only right, Prescott explained later.
After all, the two arrived in Dallas together as rookies in 2016. Back then, Elliott was a first-rounder earning more than Prescott, a fourth-round signal-caller.
Fast forward eight years and the pair remain teammates and friends in Dallas, even if their financial situations have flipped.
“He was the first guy I hugged after getting the news, honestly,” Prescott said of Elliott on Sunday in a news conference following a 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns. “I think about a guy who took care of me for the first couple of years when you talk about finances. He did. You know, when we were partying, dinners and whatever he did. He was a guy who never let me pull out my wallet.”
Elliott signed a one-year contract worth $2 million to return to the Cowboys this offseason after a one-year stint with the Patriots.
After scoring a touchdown in the resounding win over the Browns on Sunday, Elliott said he was “super excited” for Prescott.
“I see the work he puts in day in and day out, so I could not think of a more deserving person to get that contract,” Elliott said.
Elliott wasn’t the only player to react to Prescott’s contract. The 31-year-old quarterback said running back Malik Davis joked that Prescott would need to measure his teammate’s wrists so he could buy them watches. KaVontae Turpin asked Prescott to pay him $1,500 a week.
He discussed those playful comments with a smile, but Prescott took a more serious tone when discussing his embrace with Elliott.
Said Prescott: “For him to be there in that moment made it even more special.”
