Marvel Studios has been keeping a tight lid on Avengers: Doomsday — a project currently in production under the direction of the Russo brothers. So far, all they’ve revealed is a star-studded cast and the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Victor von Doom.
Recently, Robert posted a video on his personal Instagram during the filming of Doomsday, which featured two notable Marvel comic books.
The first is Secret Wars — the main inspiration for the blockbuster of the same name set to premiere at the end of 2027. The second, surprisingly, is Iron Man: Legacy of Doom — a miniseries centered around Tony Stark and Victor von Doom, two characters played by Downey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Iron Man: Legacy of Doom is one of many stories in which Iron Man faces off against Doctor Doom in the comics. Initially, the two join forces and descend into Hell in pursuit of the demon Mephisto. However, Doom ultimately betrays Iron Man, trading his ally in exchange for a mysterious artifact from Mephisto.
Notably, Mephisto — after much speculation — has officially joined the MCU in the Ironheart project. The demon performs sinister rituals and makes deceptive bargains, just as he does in the comics — and just like in Iron Man: Legacy of Doom.
These intriguing parallels have fans dreaming of a scenario where Iron Man himself appears in Avengers: Doomsday. Naturally, Robert Downey Jr. would portray both characters — one he’s embodied for over a decade, and the other, one of Marvel’s most iconic villains.
As for the Secret Wars comic shown in Robert’s video, it’s the 2015 version, where Doctor Doom plays the ultimate villain in a storyline that leads to the collapse of the multiverse.
He becomes God Emperor Doom and rules over Battleworld — a planet composed of fragments from different Marvel universes. It’s a place that gathers countless characters from across multiple timelines. There’s a strong possibility that this storyline will be adapted for the big screen in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
