Juan Soto makes stunning revelation about free agency: Mets didn’t offer biggest deal

Mets right fielder Juan Soto signed the richest contract in December. But according to him, it wasn’t the biggest offer he received in contract negotiations.

On Friday, Dominican sports reporters Vian Araujo Puello and Ricardo Rodríguez released a clip of their podcast, “Abriendo El Podcast,” in which Soto made the stunning revelation.

“There were five finalists: Dodgers, Toronto, Boston, Mets and Yankees,” Soto told Puello and Rodríguez in Spanish, via Instagram.

Asked why he chose the Mets in the end, Soto said it was a “collective decision.”

“The Mets weren’t the ones who offered the most money,” Soto said to the dismay of the hosts. “There were teams that offered more than the Mets.”

The clip ends with Soto smiling after Rodríguez asked if he’s willing to share who those teams were. Those interested will have to wait until Sunday when the full episode drops — if Soto reveals them at all.

It is fair to say, based on the reporting of NJ Advance Media and others, that the Yankees were not one of the teams that exceeded the Mets’ 15-year, $765 million offer, which can reach $805 million if the Mets execute a clause that pays him an extra $4 million per season in the final 10 years of the deal. The Yankees offered Soto 16 years, $760 million.

That leaves the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Dodgers as the only other possibilities.

The baseball world could be in for another free-agent frenzy next offseason when Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is expected to test the market. On Thursday, the four-time All-Star revealed that he sought less than $600 million on a long-term extension with Toronto.

“It’s much less than Soto,” Guerrero told ESPN’s Enrique Rojas and Ernesto Jerez. “We’re talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less.”

The aforementioned teams will likely be in the market for Guerrero. Will he take less to play for one over the rest, like Soto claims he did?
