The Devil Wears Prada could have had quite a different casting. On Friday, Kate Hudson revealed to Capital FM’s Capital Breakfast that she made the “bad call” of passing on the role of Andrea Sachs from the 2006 film.

“That was a bad call,” Hudson said of her decision. “It was a timing thing, it was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t.”

“That was one where when I saw it I was like, ‘Ugh,’” she added. “But again, everything happens for a reason. There’s a reason for that. I should’ve made that work.”

The role ended up going to Anne Hathaway and was a box-office success. In the film, Hathaway stars opposite Meryl Streep, who earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Miranda Priestly, a character loosely inspired by Vogue’s Anna Wintour. (Streep won the Golden Globe for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for the role.)

“It’s funny, it’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times,” Hudson said. “It’s not like you don’t do them because you don’t want to do them. It’s like, oh, you’re doing something else. And it just sucked, you know?”

The Devil Wears Prada premiered back in 2006, and although it’s unclear what project Hudson was working on at the time of Devil’s filming, You, Me, and Dupree with Owen Wilson and Matt Dillon also premiered in 2006. Hudson and Hathaway ended up starring together in the comedy film Bride Wars in 2009.

Last year, the Devil Wears Prada cast’s Hathaway and Streep took the stage with Emily Blunt (who also played Streep’s assistant in the movie) during the SAG Awards. Separately, Elton John wrote and premiered a stage production based on the film that premiered at London’s West End in December.
