She delivered a powerhouse performance at a Broadway rally for Kamala Harris
Is the Anne Hathaway renaissance at last upon us? With two of the actor’s most beloved films (The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada) now green-lit for sequels, Hathaway is paying homage to another of her classics—through song.
On Monday evening, the Oscar-winning star took the stage in New York City for Broadway Rallies for Kamala Harris, a special campaign event for the Democratic presidential nominee and vice president. For the starry affair, Hathaway put her vocal chops to good use by belting out Queen’s 1995 anthem “Somebody to Love”—the very same song she sang in Disney’s 2004 fantasy film Ella Enchanted.
In footage captured by fans and posted to social media, Hathaway introduced the unexpected song with a brief speech on the significance of voting in this year’s election.
“America is a big place and not everybody is decided, especially in an election like this when passions are rightly so intense because the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s still very important to remember that you have to meet people where they’re at,” she said, wearing a shimmery black sequined tuxedo jacket as a minidress, paired with slouchy over-the-knee leather boots. “We thought that it might be nice to make a little space tonight for the undecided voter and contemplate a question that they might be struggling with.”
