Barbie took the world by storm after its highly anticipated release in July 2023 with Ryan Gosling‘s iconic performance as Ken to surely go down in history.
Yet while the rest of the world sang along to the actor’s sensational performance of I’m Just Ken, Ryan’s two children have yet to see the film.
Speaking to E! News at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Ryan, 43, admitted that although his daughters Esmerelda, 9, and Amada, 7, helped him prepare for his role as Ken, he hasn’t let them see the film.
He explained: ‘I don’t know if you should watch your father as Ken. I don’t know what age is a good age to see your father do that. It gets pretty crazy.’
Ryan and his wife Eva Mendes are incredible private about their relationship and never share snaps together on social media.

But Ryan did admit that his children’s love for Barbie was a factor in him taking the role.
‘I knew that they loved it because they kept saying at first, “Hey, can we go to Target?” he recalled. ‘And we go to Target, and then they’d slowly go by the Barbie aisle. And my wife and I sort of realized, “OK, I think it’s time to let them have Barbies.” And no interest in Ken, which was pretty interesting, too.’
And while they haven’t seen the full film, Ryan did allow them to visit Barbie land to involve them in the process.
‘They’ve seen little parts of it and they came to set one day when I did a big musical number,’ he explained.
Meanwhile Ryan found himself becoming a viral meme earlier this week after his hilarious confused reaction to his Barbie track I’m Just Ken winning Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards.
The star furrowed his eyebrows and looked slightly horrified after the track was named Best Original Song at the event, with his deadpan expression sending social media abuzz.
Ryan didn’t take to the stage to accept the award and instead writers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt received the honor.
One user said Ryan ‘created a new meme with this face’ at the show, while another user said, ‘I’m sill laughing at Ryan Gosling’s face hahahaha.’

Ryan also gave the sweetest shoutout to his wife and their two daughters at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Saturday.
As he accepted the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, the La La Land star, reflected on meeting the actress, 49, on set of The Place Beyond the Pines while costarring as love interests Romina and Luke.
While alluding to the gritty drama that brought them together in 2011, the Barbie actor gushed about how landing the role ultimately led him to meet his soul mate.
‘Most importantly, I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children,’ Golden Globe winner said.
He continued: ‘I dreamed of one day making movies, and now, movies have made my life a dream.’
‘It’s hard to imagine being at a point in my career where I’m standing up here tonight,’ Ryan said. ‘… It’s just that it’s Kirk Douglas. He’s one of the first true icons of cinema … he is completely and utterly in the class of his own, and I’m … just Ken?’
The star added: ‘Up until this point, I’ve only ever thought about just how much cinema had done for me. I had never really thought about what I’ve done for cinema, as far back as I can remember.’
The day after the ceremony, the actress, 49, reposted a clip of the 43-year-old Barbie star’s stunned reaction to his name being called and wrote in her caption: ‘I LOVE HIM!!!!’
